Unit 551 is an over-the-counter hunting unit, where hunters can purchase licenses for the archery and second and third rifle seasons up to the day of the hunt. Licenses for muzzleloading and first and fourth rifle seasons are by drawing only. However, the area is a statewide muzzleloading unit, whereby any hunter that has drawn a statewide muzzleloading tag can hunt there.

Elk hunting is excellent in the area, but the trophy mule deer hunting has been overlooked. Gunnison, of course, is known for trophy mule deer. This area has the potential for excellent high-country mule deer hunting.

The current outfitter is conducting guided archery and rifle elk hunts only. The permit days allow for about 20-22 guided hunters a year. However, summer horseback rides could be offered as a source of additional revenue.
